A pebble cove at the end of a wooded valley, guarded by a Victorian wall — one of the Haven's oldest landing places.
Monk Haven is a sheltered pebble cove where a green valley meets the Milford Haven waterway, closed off by a dramatic castellated Victorian wall built as part of the Trewarren estate. It has been a landing place since the age of the saints — the valley path passes St Ishmael's church, founded, tradition says, in the sixth century on the spot where the missionary came ashore.
The walk in is the treat: ten shaded minutes down the valley from St Ishmaels village, birdsong the whole way. The cove itself is stones rather than sand, better for launching a kayak or watching the ships than for sandcastles, and the Coast Path east leads to sandy Lindsway Bay if the beach itself underwhelms the children. Utterly peaceful almost every day of the year.

The light goes gold from about 19:52, and this beach faces the sunset.
Calculated for these coordinates, accurate to a minute or so. A cliff or a headland to your west will take the sun sooner than this suggests.
Dogs welcome all year — no seasonal restriction under Pembrokeshire County Council's summer beach bans.
