Accessible Pembrokeshire — what we actually know

The ones you can normally reach without steps are the town and resort beaches — Tenby North and South (ramps from the Esplanade and the harbour), Saundersfoot, Amroth, Newgale, Broad Haven, Dale, Whitesands and Newport Sands — because the road runs to them and the car park is on the sand's level. The famous coves are the opposite: Barafundle, Marloes Sands, Traeth Llyfn, Skrinkle and Ceibwr all involve steps, a cliff path or both. Loose soft sand still defeats most wheelchairs, so a beach being step-free is not the same as it being usable.

Several Pembrokeshire beaches have run beach-wheelchair schemes, usually through the local council or a lifeguard station and usually only in the main season. We don't hold current scheme details or booking arrangements, so rather than print something that may have lapsed we'd point you at Pembrokeshire County Council and the RNLI for this year's position.

Most of it isn't — it's a cliff path with stiles, steps, kissing gates and unfenced drops. There are exceptions worth knowing: the level tramway walk from Saundersfoot to Wiseman's Bridge through the old coal tunnels, the boardwalks at Bosherston lily ponds, and stretches of the Millennium Coastal-style promenades in the towns. Not much, and we'd rather say so. 78 of the 1,173 places we list carry an explicit "wheelchair accessible" tag in OpenStreetMap, 14 are tagged as limited and 16 as not accessible. The remaining 1,065 have no accessibility information at all — that means unknown, not accessible and not inaccessible. Always ring ahead.
