Pembrokeshire is one of the best counties in Britain for a holiday with a dog, and the reason is simple: most of the coast never closes to them. The catch is the part that does. From 1 May to 30 September the busiest stretches — Tenby's Castle Beach and North Beach, the main part of Saundersfoot, the central section of Newgale, Whitesands — restrict dogs under the council's orders, while Amroth's western end, Freshwater West, Marloes Sands, Broad Haven South, Newport Sands and dozens of coves welcome dogs all year. So the question isn't "is Pembrokeshire dog friendly" — it's which bit. In summer, base yourself near a year-round beach rather than a restricted one: the Castlemartin coast around Bosherston and Freshwater West, the Marloes and Dale peninsula, the north coast around Newport and Poppit Sands. Out of season the whole county opens up, and a dog on an empty Tenby beach in November is the best version of Tenby there is.
What we check on a listing. How many dogs, and whether that's stated by the provider rather than assumed. Whether the garden is enclosed — a stone wall and a gate, not a low fence onto a lane. How far the nearest year-round dog beach is, and whether there's a pub within walking distance that will let a wet dog dry by the fire (we tag stays near a pub and list every pub in the county). Ground-floor rooms and a boot room or utility help more than people think in a wet week.
The Coast Path. All 186 miles are open to dogs, on a lead near livestock and on the cliff sections — the Coast Path guide has the stretches worth a morning.
