A hot tub after a day of salt wind and cliff walking is one of life's better ideas, and Pembrokeshire's cottage stock has embraced it — there are more hot-tub stays in the county now than there were sea-view ones ten years ago. The trick is reading the listing properly, because "hot tub" covers three quite different things.
Private, shared, or booked by the hour. A private tub is yours for the week. On several farm sites the tub is shared between three or four cottages and booked in time slots with the owner — perfectly good if you know, and a shock if you didn't. A handful of holiday parks have a "spa" that is a communal tub with a rota. We say which is which on every property we've curated, and we've corrected listings where the feed said "private" and the small print said otherwise. Where the tub is. The best hot-tub stays here pair the tub with a view — a sunset over St Brides Bay from the cliffs above Broad Haven, a dark-sky night in the Preselis, the fields behind Amroth or the estuary at Newport — rather than a corner of a car park under a security light. Screening from the neighbouring cottage matters as much as the view. A wood-fired tub takes a couple of hours to heat and is worth it; an electric one is ready when you are.
When to book. Hot-tub stays sell fastest for autumn and winter weekends, when cold air and hot water are the whole point — see Pembrokeshire in winter — and for the February and October half terms. A summer hot tub is pleasant; a January one with the Milky Way over it is the reason people come back.
Towels and rules. Most providers don't include hot-tub towels; some charge a heating supplement; nearly all ask for no glass. Read the "need to know" line on the listing before you pack.
