The castle on the crag above the county town — emerging from a £24m regeneration that has kept it closed, with the town museum decamped to Riverside Quay meanwhile.
Haverfordwest Castle dominates the county town the way castles are supposed to — a 12th-century stronghold on a crag above the Cleddau that later did duty as the county gaol. The honest current position: it has been closed to visitors through a £24m "Heart of Pembrokeshire" regeneration, a scheme that was slated to run to spring 2026, and as of summer 2026 the town museum is still operating from its pop-up home at Riverside Quay in the town centre. Check the council's project page or ask locally before building a visit around going inside — this page will be updated when the reopened castle settles into a routine.
From outside, it still earns ten minutes: the view of the crag from the riverside below is the town's best photograph, and the walk up rewards with the Cleddau winding beneath.
Meanwhile Haverfordwest Priory by the river is free and open, Picton Castle and Wiston are minutes away, and the town's practical pages cover the parking that visitors actually search for.

Skyline admirers for now; check locally before planning a visit inside.
