A lived-in medieval castle turned Georgian mansion outside Haverfordwest, with 40 acres of woodland gardens — one of the county's two great garden days out.
Picton is the odd one out among Pembrokeshire castles: never ruined, continuously lived in for seven centuries, so what you tour is a castle that grew into a country house rather than a shell. The real draw for many visitors is outside — around 40 acres of woodland and walled gardens, at their loudest in spring when the rhododendrons and bluebells go off together, with a maze, play areas and a café making it a full family day.
It sits between Haverfordwest and Narberth just off the A40, which makes it the natural add-on to a Narberth food-and-shops morning. Castle interiors are seen by tour; gardens are wander-at-will. Check current opening days and prices on the castle's own site before travelling — they vary by season.
Pairs well with Blackpool Mill five minutes away, and with Scolton Manor if you're building a heritage day that doesn't depend on the weather.
Best for
Garden lovers, wet-ish days (castle tours), families who've done the beaches.
