A 30-metre embroidered telling of the 1797 French landing near Fishguard — the last invasion of Britain — stitched by 77 local volunteers, free to see.
In February 1797 a French revolutionary force landed at Carregwastad Point near Fishguard — the last invasion of mainland Britain — and surrendered within two days, undone by Welsh weather, looted drink and local legend Jemima Nicholas, who reputedly rounded up a dozen French soldiers armed with a pitchfork.
For the bicentenary, 77 local stitchers spent four years embroidering the whole story Bayeux-style: the Last Invasion Tapestry, thirty metres of wit, colour and pitchfork, displayed in a purpose-built gallery in Fishguard's town hall. It's free, it takes half an hour to do properly, and it's the best wet-weather culture stop in the north of the county.
The invasion sites themselves are walkable: the surrender was signed in the Royal Oak on the square, and the Fishguard to Pwll Deri coast stage passes the landing point at Carregwastad. Check gallery hours locally — town-hall opening applies.
A rainy Fishguard hour; anyone who thinks 1066 was the last invasion.
