Bonfire night in Pembrokeshire is a rugby club and village hall affair rather than anything municipal. Displays are put on by clubs, schools, carnival committees and lifeboat stations, mostly on the weekend nearest the fifth, and they are advertised locally — noticeboards, shop windows, community pages — rather than through any county listing.
The coastal ones are the good ones. Fireworks over water, from a harbour wall or a beach, with the sound coming back off the cliffs, beats the same display in a field. Coastal towns and villages with a club or a station make the most of it.
What to expect. A bonfire, a burger van, a hot dog queue longer than the display itself, glow sticks, and fifteen minutes of fireworks. Entry is usually a few pounds on the gate for a local cause. It will be muddy.
Practical. Dress for standing still in a wet field in November, which is colder than walking in a wet field in November. Take a torch — the walk back to the car will be along an unlit lane. Cash on the gate.
The dog problem. If you are here with a dog, this fortnight is difficult; displays happen on scattered dates either side of the fifth, so there is no single night to plan around. Walk early, feed early, close the curtains and put something noisy on. Owners of horses and livestock in the county feel the same way about it, which is why displays are usually well away from farmland.
