Carew is the most photographed castle in the county and the reason is the mill pond: the ruin sits directly on the water and reflects into it, which is why it appears on every calendar of Wales ever printed.
The building is two castles in one. The western side is a Norman military fortress; the northern range is a late Elizabethan mansion with enormous mullioned windows, put in by Sir John Perrot, who ran out of money and favour before finishing. You walk from one century into the other in about ten paces.
The mill. At the far side of the pond stands the only restored tidal mill in Wales. The pond fills on the flood tide, the gates shut, and the trapped water drives the wheel on the ebb — a machine powered by the moon. It is open with the same ticket and takes twenty minutes.
The cross. By the road stands an 11th-century Celtic cross, over four metres tall, carved for a king of Deheubarth. It is free to look at, standing in the open behind railings, and most people drive past it.
Through the season the National Park runs guided walks, bat evenings, ghost tours and family days. The programme changes each year — check before planning around a specific one.
Practical. The castle and mill walk circles the pond in about an hour and is mostly flat. There is a pub across the road and a cafe on site. Everything shuts for the winter, so check opening before travelling in the off season.
Every year
Carew Castle and its tidal mill open for the season each spring, with a summer programme of events, and close again in late autumn.
