Scolton Manor Museum & Country Park

Pembrokeshire's county museum: a Victorian manor, working heritage exhibits and 60 acres of country park with play areas — the park itself costs nothing.

Scolton is where the county keeps its own story: a Victorian country house shown as it was lived in, museum galleries on Pembrokeshire life, and — the children's favourite — a Great Western Railway locomotive in the grounds. Around it spreads a country park of woodland trails, meadows, an adventure playground and a café.

The structure of the day is unusually kind to a budget: the country park is the free part, with parking charges only, while the manor and museum take a modest entry fee (current prices and hours on the council's site). On a fine day the park alone fills an afternoon; when rain arrives you move indoors instead of moving on — which is why it also earns a place in the rainy-day guide's way of thinking.

Five miles north of Haverfordwest, and an easy pair with Picton Castle or Wiston.

Best for

Families with mixed ages; a half-day that survives a change in the weather.
