Aber Draw, Trefin

Aber Draw is the small bay at the bottom of the hill from Trefin, on the north coast between Abereiddi and Abercastle. It's boulders, rock ledges and storm shingle rather than a sandy beach, with a stream coming down the valley and, right on the shore, the roofless stone shell of Melin Trefin — the old corn mill, subject of a well-known Welsh poem by Crwys about the silenced wheel. It's one of the most recognisable ruins on this coast.

Don't come for a beach day. Come for a short walk from the village, a look at the mill, and the geology: the ledges here are folded and layered in ways that photograph beautifully in low light, and the rock pools at low tide are good. There's very limited parking at the bottom of the lane, so it's better to leave the car in Trefin and walk down in five minutes. There are no facilities at the cove.

The Coast Path in both directions is the real draw. West takes you past Aber Felin towards Porthgain in about an hour, with the ghost harbour, the Sloop Inn and the brick hoppers waiting at the end — one of the best walk-and-lunch combinations in Pembrokeshire. East leads to Abercastle and the Carreg Samson burial chamber, a 5,000-year-old cromlech in a field above the sea, easily reached and rarely busy. Trefin itself has a pub and is a common overnight stop for people walking the Coast Path.
