Harbour Lights Gallery

Porthgain is a tiny former quarry harbour on the north coast, and the Harbour Lights has been part of it for over forty years: a family-run commercial gallery dealing in original contemporary and twentieth-century Welsh and British art, with a framing workshop attached. The stock changes continuously rather than in fixed exhibitions, so two visits a month apart won't look the same. Names on the walls range from Sir Kyffin Williams, John Piper and Graham Sutherland to John Knapp-Fisher — the painter most associated with this coast — and living artists such as David Tress, Karl Taylor and Sarah Lees, several of whom the gallery says you won't find elsewhere in the county.

Framing is the other half of the business — hand-made and hand-painted frames, conservation mounting, UV glass, museum-standard work for the precious stuff, price agreed before anything is cut. Purchases can be spread through the Own Art scheme (interest-free from £250 to £5,000) and UK mainland delivery is free.

Open Monday to Friday 11–4.30 and Saturday afternoons, Sundays by appointment, year round. There's free parking right outside and level access into the main room; the second room has a step and a narrow doorway. The gallery cottage next door sleeps four. Porthgain's other attractions are The Sloop Inn and the Abereiddi–Porthgain walk, which starts and ends at the harbour.
