Pembrokeshire has lifeboat stations at Tenby, Angle, St Davids, Little Haven and Fishguard, covering a coast with tidal races, unlit rocks and a lot of people who have misjudged one or the other. Through the summer the stations open their doors.

What happens. The boathouse is open, the boat is out on display, crew members answer questions, and there are stalls, raffles and a bucket. At the stations with a slipway the highlight is a launch demonstration — an all-weather lifeboat going down the ramp and hitting the water is a genuinely startling thing to watch from close range.

Tenby's station is the one most visitors see, sitting at the end of its own pier below Castle Hill with a long slipway straight into the sea. The view from the harbour beach is excellent and free.

Talking to the crew is the part people underrate. These are local volunteers with pagers, doing this around jobs, and the stories about what they actually get called to — mostly inflatables, cut-off swimmers and people trapped by the tide under cliffs — are a more effective safety briefing than any sign.

The honest bit. Launch demonstrations are cancelled if the boat is needed or the sea is wrong, and dates differ by station with no single county-wide listing. Check the individual station's page or ask locally.

While you are there, learn the number. Coastguard, 999, on any beach in trouble. The beach guides cover which beaches here are lifeguarded and when.

Every year

Pembrokeshire's lifeboat stations hold open days in the summer, with the boathouse open, crew on hand, fundraising stalls and — sea state permitting — a launch demonstration.
