Welsh cake bakers turned café — MamGu's Kitchen fills the fourteenth-century Cathedral Refectory in St Davids with rarebit, cawl, crempogs and a dozen kinds of Welsh cake.
Founding Partner. MamGu's Kitchen, St Davids was already in the guide and accepted our free enhanced entry — their own photographs, a fuller write-up, and details checked with them each season. No money changes hands, and it has no effect on where they appear in our rankings.
MamGu started as a Welsh cake business and still makes them by hand and the thousand at its St Davids bakery - traditional ones and their alternative 'welsh cakes with a twist' flavours alongside - but the café is what most visitors meet. Since 2024 that has been the Refectory beside St Davids Cathedral, a Grade II listed fourteenth-century room with a mezzanine upstairs; the original Solva café closed when it moved. A second café sits on the harbour wall in Saundersfoot.
The menu is what they champion as Welsh soul food: Welsh rarebit made with local ale and Welsh cheese, homemade cawl, stacks of crempogs (the Welsh pancake, sweet or savoury), loaded savoury Welsh cakes, and their viral Welsh cake churros for pudding. Breakfast runs until 11.30, lunch until three; a rarebit was £10.50 and a cream tea £5.80 when we checked (September 2026), with a children's menu around a fiver. The kitchen makes a point of local sourcing and daily specials, so the printed menu is short.
Open daily, 9.30 to 4.00, no bookings — walk in. Dogs are welcome in both cafés. There's a wheelchair lift at the St Davids entrance (not for motorised scooters) and accessible toilets in the cathedral cloister by the cafe entrance. The company is proudly B Corp certified.
Best for
Lunch after the cathedral; a proper Welsh breakfast; picking up a box of Welsh cakes for the cottage.
Why this one might suit you
Dogs are welcome, there's somewhere to sit outside, it's set up for families and it opens on Sundays.
Assembled from what we can evidence — hygiene ratings, measured distances and the venue's own listed details — not from a visit. We haven't eaten here, and we don't pretend to have.
