Swim on Friday, bike on Saturday, marathon on Sunday, all based in Tenby. Do one, do all three, or just watch.
Tenby hosts endurance racing twice a year, and this is the summer one. The format splits a long-distance triathlon across three days: an open-water swim from North Beach on the Friday evening, a long road bike stage through the county on the Saturday, and a marathon on the Sunday. You can enter a single day or the lot.
Watching the swim. The harbour and the walls above North Beach give you the whole thing, and a mass swim start in a walled harbour town at dusk is a better spectacle than it sounds. It is free and you do not need to be anywhere in particular.
Watching the bike. The route heads out into south Pembrokeshire lanes. Anywhere on a climb is good, because that is where the field spreads out and where the noise is.
Watching the run. The marathon laps the town and the South Beach end, which means you can sit outside a cafe and see the same runners repeatedly.
The honest bit. It is not Ironman scale, but a summer weekend in Tenby is already at capacity, so adding several thousand athletes and their families makes parking miserable. Use the park and ride if it is running. Roads on the bike route are not closed but they are busy with cyclists in groups — if you are driving in the county that Saturday, allow extra time and be patient on blind lanes.
Check the organiser's site for this year's dates, distances and any road restrictions.
