A week of classical music in north Pembrokeshire, in halls and churches small enough that you can hear the players breathe.
This festival has been running for decades and is one of the more serious classical programmes in west Wales. Chamber music, recitals, choral and orchestral concerts, spread across venues in and around Fishguard over roughly a week in high summer.
The venues are the appeal. These are small halls and parish churches, not concert halls. You sit close, the sound is direct, and there is none of the distance of a big auditorium. Some events use larger and grander buildings elsewhere in the county, which changes the character completely — the same programme in a stone church and in a cathedral are different evenings.
What is on. The mix leans towards chamber and solo repertoire with visiting professional musicians, plus events aimed at local performers and young players. The programme is published in advance and it is worth reading rather than guessing.
Where to stay. North Pembrokeshire has fewer beds than the south, and late July is peak season regardless of the festival. Fishguard, Goodwick, Newport and Dinas Cross are the obvious bases and all book up. Driving from St Davids takes around forty minutes on lanes in the dark, which is worth factoring in after an evening concert.
Around it. Late July is the last of the puffins, the start of the seal season and the best month for the north coast beaches — Pwllgwaelod, Aber Draw and Abermawr are all within twenty minutes.
