Photo: TenbyIsland.co.uk (CC0)Tenby's tidal island — a Palmerston fort on a rock off Castle Beach, reached across the sand at low tide when it's open.
The rock off Castle Beach with the fortress on top is St Catherine's Island: a genuine Palmerston-era fort of the 1860s, built (like Chapel Bay across the county) against a French threat that never sailed, and later — improbably — a private house and even a small zoo. It's the most photographed hundred square metres in Tenby after the harbour.
Access is the adventure: the island is cut off except around low tide, when the sand opens and you can walk across from Castle Beach. The fort opens to visitors on an entry fee when conditions and staffing allow — check the island's own site or the boards on the beach for opening days and safe crossing times, and take the tide seriously; the water comes back quicker than crossers expect.
Even shut, it anchors the best short stroll in town: harbour, Castle Hill museum, Castle Beach, island — with the Tenby guide covering where to base yourself amid it all.
Tide-timed adventurers; Tenby days that need one more story.
It is a few minutes' walk from Tenby Castle Beach, and it sits at the start or finish of one of our walks.
