Where to Stay in Tenby: An Honest Local Guide

Tenby rewards a little homework. The town is small, but where you sleep changes the holiday: a harbour-view cottage inside the walls is a different trip from a dune-backed house above South Beach. Here's how we'd choose, having walked every street of it.

Inside the walls

The medieval core is the Tenby of postcards — and the most atmospheric place to stay. You'll walk to everything: three beaches, the harbour, every restaurant. The compromises are real, though. Parking is the big one: most properties inside the walls have none, the streets are permit-restricted, and the multi-storey fills in August. If a listing says "parking nearby", ask exactly where and what it costs. Noise is the second: streets around Tudor Square carry pub noise until midnight in season. Pick lanes towards the quieter St Julian's/harbour end for the best of both.

Best for: couples, car-free breaks, anyone who wants to fall out of bed into the town.

The Esplanade & South Cliff

Victorian terraces stare straight over South Beach towards Caldey Island — this is where you come for a proper sea view from the sofa. It's a two-minute walk down to the sand and five to the walled town, but crucially it's outside the parking chaos, and several houses here have spaces. Southerly light all day; sunsets over the dunes.

Best for: families with beach ambitions, sea-view hunters, longer stays.

Heywood Lane / out towards the golf links

Bigger houses, gardens, driveways — the practical choice for groups and dog owners (South Beach's dog-friendly stretch is at this end, via the golf links or Penally). You'll drive or take the 15–20 minute walk into town.

Best for: large groups, dogs, anyone with small children and much kit.

The mistakes first-timers make

1. Booking inside the walls with a car and no plan. Solve parking before you book, not after.
2. Assuming all three beaches allow dogs. In season (May–Sep) Castle Beach and North Beach's main sweep don't; South Beach's southern stretch does, all year.
3. Only considering summer. Tenby out of season is glorious — storm light, empty walls, log fires — and prices drop sharply. October half-term and Christmas book out, though.
4. Ignoring Penally and New Hedges. A mile or two out, meaningfully cheaper, and the coast path or a five-minute drive brings you in.

Booking timing

School summer holidays for houses sleeping 6+: book by January. Couples' cottages: 2–4 months out is usually fine except bank holidays. Late deals do appear in June and September — our last-minute page tracks providers who surface them.
