Abbey ruins, a working water mill and the official start of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, on the Teifi opposite Cardigan.
St Dogmaels lines the western bank of the Teifi estuary just downstream of Cardigan, and it carries more history per street than its size suggests. The abbey, founded in the twelfth century by Tironensian monks, stands in substantial ruin beside the parish church, with a modern visitor building and a Sunday-morning local market in the coach house that is one of the better food markets in west Wales. In the church is the Sagranus Stone, inscribed in both Latin and ogham, which gave scholars one of the keys to reading the ogham alphabet.
Just up the hill, Y Felin is a working water-powered corn mill that still grinds and sells flour — a genuinely rare thing, and worth an hour. Down at the quay, the estuary is busy with boats and birds; seals come well upriver, and dolphins are regularly seen off the bar at the mouth. The village is also the official northern terminus of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, marked by a sculpture at Poppit Sands, and there is real pleasure in walking the first or last mile whether or not you intend to do the other 185.
Poppit Sands itself is a mile and a half away: a big, lifeguarded, dune-backed beach with parking and seasonal facilities, and strong currents near the river mouth that mean swimming should be within the flags. Cardigan, over the bridge, supplies supermarkets, a castle, a theatre and restaurants. The village lanes are narrow, and parking at the abbey and quay is limited in summer.

Houses on the hill and towards Poppit trade the walk for estuary views and easier parking. Getting there
From Cardigan across the bridge on the B4546, then narrow village streets. Cardigan is the nearest town for services; there is no rail here, the closest stations being on the West Wales line at Clunderwen and Carmarthen, both a fair drive.
