Illustrated beach scene for Abercastle

Abercastle

A sheltered working-harbour cove between Trefin and Mathry — kayaks, crab lines and a 5,000-year-old tomb up the hill.

Abercastle is a proper little harbour village: a deep sheltered inlet where fishing boats still moor, a slipway, a shingle-and-sand beach at low water, and green headlands either side. The shelter makes it one of the best kayak and paddleboard launches on the north coast, and children spend hours crabbing off the slip.

The essential detour is Carreg Samson, ten minutes up the Coast Path west of the harbour — a magnificent 5,000-year-old burial chamber with its capstone still balanced on three uprights, standing in a farm field above the sea. Abercastle was also where Alfred Johnson landed in 1876, completing the first single-handed crossing of the Atlantic; a plaque by the harbour tells the story. Parking is a small free area by the beach and fills early on summer weekends.
