A sheltered, dune-backed crescent facing south — easy parking, safe paddling and far fewer people than Tenby.
Freshwater East is the quiet family beach of the south coast: a curve of sand between low headlands, backed by dunes and a scatter of holiday housing, with a car park and toilets a short walk from the sand. It faces south into Carmarthen Bay and is sheltered from the prevailing westerlies, which means it's often usable when Freshwater West on the other side of the peninsula is a wind tunnel.
The bay shelves gently and the water is generally calm, making it a reasonable spot for paddling and swimming, though it is unguarded and there can be a rip along the eastern rocks when there's swell about. The dunes behind are a conservation area with orchids and other dune flora in early summer — stick to the marked paths through them. The stream at the western end is a reliable source of entertainment for anyone under ten.
It works well as a base for the surrounding coast. The Coast Path west runs a fine cliff section to Stackpole Quay and on to Barafundle in about an hour and a half, and east climbs over to Swanlake Bay and then Manorbier. Neither Freshwater East nor its immediate surroundings offer much in the way of shops or eating out, so bring supplies — Lamphey and Pembroke are ten minutes' drive inland, Manorbier and Tenby are east along the A4139. In August it gets busy but rarely full.
