Freshwater West
Wales's premier surf beach: huge Atlantic sands, dunes, film fame — and genuinely dangerous swimming. Walk it, surf it, respect it.
Freshwater West is the county's wildest big beach — a great Atlantic-facing sweep where the surf that delights experienced boarders makes casual swimming genuinely hazardous (powerful rips and shore break; heed the safety signage). This is a beach for walking into the wind, watching surfers, flying kites and photographing weather.
Its screen credits (Robin Hood's landing beach; Shell Cottage and Dobby's grave from the Deathly Hallows) bring pilgrims — the pebble-decorated Dobby memorial in the dunes has become a genuinely touching bit of folk tradition. On the northern headland stands a restored seaweed-drying hut, last relic of the laverbread gatherers. Roadside parking along the B4319; nothing else for miles, which is the point. The Café Môr seasonal seaweed-butter food truck, when pitched, is worth the trip alone.
