Pembrokeshire has a lot of beaches and comparatively few lifeguards. The ones below are the beaches where the RNLI have historically provided seasonal cover — typically from late spring to early September, with reduced hours at the shoulders of the season.
That word seasonal is doing a lot of work. Cover has a first day and a last day each year, and outside those dates a lifeguarded beach is simply a beach. Check the RNLI's own listing for this year's dates before you rely on it.
Everywhere else — which is most of this coastline — you are on your own, and the water here is more serious than it looks. Freshwater West is beautiful and has killed people. Rips run at Newgale and Broad Haven on a big swell. If you swim outside the flags, swim where you can stand, go with someone, and remember that on this coast you dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
How this list was made: Beaches recorded as having RNLI seasonal lifeguard cover. It is worked out from our own data every time this page is built, not maintained by hand — so it stays in step with the individual beach guides. 8 of the 45 beaches we cover qualify.
