The beaches below are the ones our surfing guide names as the county's breaks. Broadly: Freshwater West and Newgale take the biggest swell and hold serious rips; Whitesands is the main learner beach and has seasonal lifeguard cover; Manorbier and Broad Haven pick up cleaner, smaller days.
If you're learning, go with a school and go where the lifeguards are. If you're experienced and going somewhere unpatrolled, treat Freshwater West with the respect its record deserves — it is beautiful, it is powerful, and it has drowned people.
