The Best Dog-Friendly Beaches in Pembrokeshire (and Where to Stay)

Pembrokeshire is close to the best dog-walking county in Britain. There are 186 miles of Coast Path, almost all of it open to dogs on a lead, and a pub culture that mostly takes a wet spaniel without comment.

The beach rules are the thing that catches people out, and they catch people out every single summer.

The pattern

Seasonal restrictions on the busier beaches typically run 1 May to 30 September. On a restricted beach dogs are banned from the main stretch of sand for those five months. Not confined to one end — banned. The signs are at the access points and enforcement is real.

The beaches without restrictions tend to be the wilder ones with no facilities and a walk in from the car. Which, conveniently, are the beaches most people with a dog would choose anyway.

Four you can plan around

Barafundle Bay takes dogs all year. There's no road to it — you park at Stackpole Quay and walk half a mile over the headland — which is why it stays as good as it does. No bins, no water, no shade. Carry everything in and out.

Marloes Sands is a mile of sand under folded rock, reached down a long path from the National Trust car park. Dogs all year. Combine it with the Marloes peninsula circuit and you've filled a day.

Manorbier allows dogs year-round, has a castle above it, and a car park close enough that it works on a wet afternoon when the longer walks don't appeal.

Tenby South Beach, at the southern end towards Giltar and Penally, is the resort exception. Miles of flat sand at low water, dogs welcome all year at that end, restrictions in force on the town end in season.

The strategy that works

Wild beaches from May to September, town beaches from October. It really is that simple, and it means choosing a base near an unrestricted beach rather than near a lifeguarded one.

If you're coming in October or later, the whole coast opens up and Tenby, Saundersfoot and Newport Sands become the empty dog beaches they aren't in July.

What to check in the cottage

Beyond the "dogs welcome" tick, four things separate an easy week from an annoying one.

Enclosed, not just "garden". Listings say garden when they mean a lawn open to a lane. If it matters, ask whether it's fully fenced and how high.

How many, and what it costs. Most places take one or two dogs as standard and charge per dog beyond that. A few exclude particular breeds or sizes.

Whether dogs can be left alone. Many owners say no, explicitly, in the terms. That rules out a day out at anywhere that doesn't take dogs, and it's the clause people read after they've booked.

Floors and a boot room. Hard floors downstairs, an outside tap and somewhere to hang wet things beat any amount of decor after a February walk at Marloes.

Three things that actually matter outdoors

Livestock. The Coast Path runs through grazing land with unfenced cliff edges. Leads on, and give cattle plenty of room.

Seals. Grey seals pup on beaches and in coves below the path from late August into autumn. A loose dog near a pup is a serious problem for both. If there's a seal on the beach, leave the beach.

Ticks. Bracken country in the Preselis and the Gwaun Valley is tick country from spring to autumn. Check the dog every night.
