Pembrokeshire Cottages With Hot Tubs: How to Choose Well

A hot tub makes more sense in Pembrokeshire than in most places, for one reason: the weather. You get in because the air is cold and the sky is doing something. In August you'll use it once, after the beach, and then forget about it for four days.

Which is why the best hot-tub week here is usually in February.

What the phrase actually covers

"Hot tub" in a listing stretches from a wood-fired barrel on a deck with nothing in front of it but a field, to an acrylic tub in a shared courtyard with three other cottages' kitchen windows pointing at it. Both descriptions are accurate. Only one of them is the holiday people are imagining.

Five things to establish before you pay.

Is it private? Look the address up on satellite view. Converted farm buildings are the most common hot-tub stays in the county and they usually come in clusters of three or four around one yard. That can be perfectly fine. It is not fine if you assumed otherwise and you've brought a book and a bad mood.

Wood-fired or electric? A wood-fired tub takes a couple of hours to reach temperature and needs feeding while you're in it. That's either part of the evening or a chore, depending on the person. Electric is ready when you are. Ask which it is, and ask whether the fuel or the electricity is included or metered.

Will it be working when you're there? Some tubs are drained and covered for the winter. Some are serviced on changeover day, which can take out most of your first afternoon. Listings often don't say. Owners will tell you if you ask, and the answer is a decent proxy for how well the place is run.

What's the group policy? A lot of hot-tub properties won't accept single-sex groups, stag and hen parties, or bookings where everyone is under 25. Find out before you pay a deposit rather than after.

What's in front of it? Not what's in the photograph — photographs are taken from the one angle that works. A hedge, a field, a lane, a car park. Ask.

Where they cluster

Inland, overwhelmingly. The deepest supply sits in the countryside between Narberth, the Preseli foothills and the south coast, where old farm buildings have the space for a deck and a screening hedge.

Coastal villages have far fewer. Plots are tight, and building anything new close to the Coast Path inside a National Park is slow and often refused. A tub with an actual sea horizon in front of it is one of the rarest combinations in Pembrokeshire lettings, and it prices like it.

Inland is not the compromise it sounds. From most cottages around Narberth you're twenty minutes from the beaches at Tenby and Saundersfoot, and inside the county's best small food town for dinner.

The dark sky argument

The other reason to be inland is what happens overhead. The Preselis and the Gwaun Valley have very little light spilling into them, and on a clear moonless night the difference from a lit village is not subtle. If that appeals, look north of the A40 rather than on the coast — and go between October and March, when it's properly dark by seven.

Being honest about the cost

A cottage with a hot tub prices above the same cottage without one, and the gap is widest in high summer, which is exactly when you'll use it least. Run the search both ways for the same week and see what the tub is actually costing you.

If the budget is tight, the sensible move is a winter week with a tub rather than a summer week with one. Same cottage, lower rate, better use.
