Where to Stay in Haverfordwest: The County Town as a Base

Nobody comes to Pembrokeshire for Haverfordwest, and that's exactly why it works: central, on the railway, every bus starts here, and twenty minutes from three coasts. The hotels, and the case for staying inland.

Illustrated scene for guide: Where to Stay in Haverfordwest: The County Town as a Base

Haverfordwest is the county town, the market town, the place with the hospital, the big supermarkets and the railway station — and almost nobody's idea of a holiday. Which is a shame for the town and useful for you, because it is also the most central place in Pembrokeshire, twenty to thirty minutes from Tenby, St Davids, Newgale and Fishguard, with every bus route in the county starting at its bus station. For a car-free week, or a wet one, or a working one, it is the base that makes sense.

Everything we hold a record for is on the Haverfordwest stay lists.

The town hotels

The County Hotel on Salutation Square and Hotel Mariners on Mariners Square are the two old town hotels, both in the centre; the Glen Hotel is on Merlins Hill. The Premier Inn is on the Fishguard road on the northern edge. The guest houses — Crundale House and the rest — are on the fringes. The town centre is a walk from all of them: the castle and museum on the hill, the priory ruins by the river, Bridge Street and the High Street with the pubs. We list nineteen pubs in and around the town.

The country hotels around it

Eight miles north on the Fishguard road, Wolfscastle Country Hotel is the county's central country-house hotel, halfway to St Davids and Fishguard. East on the Cleddau, Slebech Park is the estate hotel on the estuary. West on the coast, the Druidstone above Druidston Haven is the famously unconventional clifftop hotel, twenty minutes from town and a world away from it; our Broad Haven guide covers that stretch.

Why inland works

From the bus station: the T11 to Solva and St Davids, the 349 to Pembroke and Tenby, the T5 to Fishguard and Cardigan, the 311 to Broad Haven and the coast, and the summer coastal shuttles beyond them — see coastal buses and getting around without a car. From the station: direct trains from Swansea, Cardiff and beyond, which few of the coastal towns can say. From the car park: three coasts in half an hour, and the rainy-day options of a real town when the weather turns. Withybush is the county's hospital, which matters more to some visitors than others.

The honest bit

We haven't stayed in these places and don't score them. The lists are open data with websites where the map has them. For a room on your dates, the Booking.com search on the Haverfordwest hotel list is a paid link and is labelled as one.

Paid links

Where a partner covers a place badly we leave it out rather than pad the list.

We earn a commission if you book through these links, at no extra cost to you. We have not been paid to place them and no partner can buy a position here — they are on this page because the page is where the question comes up. Prices, availability and terms are the provider’s, not ours; check them before you book.
