A Norman castle above a surfy red-sand bay — Gerald of Wales called it 'the pleasantest spot in Wales' in 1188, and he had a point.
Few beaches anywhere have a backdrop like Manorbier's: a genuine Norman castle (still intact, still visitable, occasionally hosting plays and weddings) looks down over a red-tinged sandy bay with a reliable beach break. Gerald of Wales, born in the castle in 1146, declared Manorbier "the pleasantest spot in Wales" — a quote the village has understandably never stopped using.
The village clusters behind — church, pub (the Castle Inn), tearoom, shop — and the Coast Path runs both ways to good effect: east to the striking burial chamber at King's Quoit on the headland, west towards Swanlake and Freshwater East. The bay picks up swell, so it's a favourite for surfers and bodyboarders; families use the stream and rockpools at the sides. A train halt on the Tenby line makes car-free visits possible.
