Romantic stays in Pembrokeshire

Pembrokeshire does romance the old-fashioned way: a cottage for two at the end of a lane, a beach with nobody on it, a pub with a fire, and weather dramatic enough to make staying in feel like a decision rather than a defeat. What makes a stay romantic here, honestly. A view from the bed — the west coast for sunsets, Tenby's Esplanade for Caldey in the morning light. A hot tub that's yours, not shared (we say which — see hot tub stays). A wood burner and a full log basket. One bedroom rather than three, so you're not paying for a family house. Somewhere to eat that isn't your own cooking: Narberth's restaurants, Newport's East Street, St Davids' hotels, Solva's harbour pubs.

Where. The one-bedroom apartments off Tenby's Esplanade and above the harbour; the shepherd's huts and converted barns for two on farms around Narberth and the Preselis; the flats above Goodwick looking down Fishguard Bay; the cottages at Solva and Porthgain where the harbour is the evening entertainment; the St Davids peninsula for the clifftop nights. When. Out of season, without question. A February weekend with a storm at Freshwater West, a wood burner and a hot tub under the stars is Pembrokeshire at its most itself, and the prices are half of August's.
