The difference between a beach you walk to and a beach you drive to is the whole holiday: no car park queue at eleven, no packing the car for a two-hour swim, back for lunch and out again at four when the crowds have gone. Where we've curated the property we quote the distance the listing gives — "300 metres", "a mile via the Coast Path" — because "walking distance" on its own can mean either.
Where walk-to-beach stock actually exists. Tenby is the obvious one: four beaches, and almost everything inside the walls or on the Esplanade is within ten minutes of one — see where to stay in Tenby. Saundersfoot's village and Strand; Freshwater East, where the houses sit in the dunes; Broad Haven and Little Haven on St Brides Bay; Newport for the Parrog and the Sands; Amroth's seafront; Manorbier's village above its bay; Dale around its beach. Inland stays with "beach 2 miles" are honest but they are a drive with children.
Which beach. Not all of them suit all days. A walk to Tenby South Beach or Saundersfoot gets you sand and shelter; a walk to Whitesands or Newgale gets you surf; a walk to Barafundle gets you the postcard and no facilities at all. Every beach page has the facilities, the dog rule, the lifeguard dates and the tide times, and the best beaches guide sorts them by what you want.
Tides. A walk-to beach at low tide can be a rock scramble at high — Amroth, Wisemans Bridge and Lydstep all change character completely. The tide panel on each beach page shows the week's times.
Dogs. The summer dog rules apply to the beach you're walking to, not the cottage you're walking from — check the dog-friendly beaches guide before you book a May-to-September week next to a restricted beach with a dog.
